What Is a French Bob?

Mermaids take note, there’s a new hairstyle securing the beauty glitterati’s attention. The reign of long romantic hair with tendrils that move beautifully with water is giving way to a freer style — the French bob. And once you insert the word French before a term, you know it’s got to be chic.

Time to get snippy

Easier to maintain and more natural than extensions, but less severe than last year’s Joan Jett-inspired wolf cut, the French bob is a chin length style that evokes the roaring 20’s. A century later and women feel the need to be emancipated.

It’s exhausting to always look influencer pretty. The perfect hair, makeup and wardrobe necessitates a glam squad behind every social media post. Putting in the time and unorthodox methods to attain a look that is not in your given DNA seeps into an artificial take on life.

WSJ.Magazine’s recent article, “What a Makeup-Free Selfie Really Means”, shows such high profile celebrities as Jennifer Anniston and Michelle Pfeiffer pictured without makeup. Read the story’s comments. There’s an eruption of applause and gratitude from women who want to be celebrated for their true selves. It’s time to get real and the French bob is the ideal style for today’s confident woman.

French bob variations

There’s the standard bob with a clean, even cut that’s parted in the middle. Or you can be more ambitious with short curtain bangs. (Think Audrey Tatou in Amelie.) Retire your flatiron with the shaggy bob. The wavy look is carefree and easy to care for.

Stylists are once again sheering away. Long locks are being swept into the dust pan. This short hair comeback is healthy for your hair and well-being. And for those counting down to spring, you’ll be on point for the season with a comfortable French bob.
