Good news for the host who enjoys having overnight guests, this season your guest bedroom can be used for more than a place to store the Peloton. As entertaining at home ramps up, it’s the ideal time to give your spare bedroom special treatment.
Let a hotel room be your guide, where all needs for a comfortable stay are provided. Personal touches that pamper visitors is a great way to elevate their experience, such as flowers and spa essentials. Here are simple tips in creating a well-designed and comfortable guest bedroom:
1. Design
To secure a style you love, find inspiration in your favorite social media home feeds, decor magazines, and websites. Create a mood board of your top designs. Your desired look can be achieved simply by refreshing furnishings with a thorough cleanse and fresh paint. If the room has dated wallpaper and old carpet, have it removed for a clean foundation. For any missing elements needed to compose your design, set a budget and add current pieces. Be sure to have all the correct measurements and sketch out a room plan for where everything will be positioned. This will prevent having to deal with incorrect deliveries.
2. Edit
Back to that hotel room, which is designed for visitors to feel relaxed from its lack of clutter, and use it as a model for your guest room’s scheme. They are devoid of personal knickknacks that make a guest feel like they are an intruder with a temporary stay. Keep the room clean, minimally furnished, and all accessories should serve a function.
3. Furniture
Depending on the room’s size, include all basic furniture pieces. A comfortable bed with mattress, ideally queen sized or larger, and a trending headboard in a tufted style adds a styled look. End tables are essential as both a resting area for bedside needs, added storage if it comes with drawers, along with a table lamp, calendar, notepad, and clock. Consider a television set, as some enjoy late night viewing before bed. If you have room, include a desk to create a makeshift workplace. An empty closet and bureau is also essential to stow guests belongings. A lined trash bin is another must. A unique ottoman is convenient to either place a suitcase or as an impromptu seating area.
4. Fresh flowers
We’re willing to bet that the first detail a guest will notice when arriving to their room is a stunning flower arrangement. Flowers are that added detail that show care, thought, and beauty. They’ll also make for a great conversation piece or stunning prop in your photos together.
5. Linens
Bedding brings in color, pattern, and relaxation to the room. Choose pieces that are durable and comfortable. A variety of sheets and blankets create a layered look and soothe guests with different temperature needs. Keep an extra blanket in the closet in case evening temperatures drop, which is especially useful if there isn’t a thermostat for your guest to adjust.
Have a variety of pillows with a pair of larger sizes in the back, such as a Euro (26” x 26”) or king size (20” x 36”), followed by two standard sized pillows (20” x 26”), and a decorative throw pillow, which ranges from 12” x 12” to 18” x 18”, or long lumbar (14” x 22”). A compilation of pillows not only are a soothing amenity, but also create a decorative effect.
6. Towels
Provide a full set of towels, which includes a finger, hand, and bath towel. If the guest is staying more than one night, have a laundry basket available so they know where to toss used towels and keep an extra set in the closet. An added luxury is to hang a hotel styled bathrobe in the closet and reusable slippers.
7. Lighting
An attention to natural sunlight creates both an inviting space and makes the room appear larger. Supplement with a good overhead light that has high quality LEDs and bedside lamps. Window treatments should be installed in respect to a guest preference.
8. Spa experience
Just because your home is your main residence, it doesn’t mean your guest’s can have a spa experience. Reinforce the theme with more than having a robe available, but leave out a spa kit. Further appeal to the senses with a candle and diffuser so they can fully relax. Interested in massages? If you know of a local masseuse who makes house calls, have their cards available on the bedside table, it could prompt a fun activity!
9. Snacks & beverages
Leave out a tray on the bed with nourishing light bites and beverages. Travel always works up an appetite and they will appreciate the beautifully packaged fare.
10. Reading materials, stationery, games
In a concealed storage place, stow away classic entertainment pieces like games, reading materials, and stationery.
11. Creative sleeping quarters
Sure the air mattress is a convenient alternative to the spare sofa, but some may have an aversion to sleeping in a bed’s version of a bouncy house. A throw bed strewn with lots of oversized comfy pillows will make this cozy little sanctuary the most sought-after sleeping quarters in the house.
12. House notes
Send an email or provide a pamphlet that includes wifi passcodes, rules of the home and any details, such as local destinations.
Guests will feel so pampered, don’t be surprised if they immediately schedule their next invite.
