Simple Tips to Create a Boys Bedroom with Designer Appeal

If we were to set this boy’s bedroom to music, we’d select The Beatles’ “Come Together.” An attention to mixing prints, customized pieces, and a unification of bold colors elevate a basic boy’s room to a sanctuary with a P.O.V. When designing your child’s room, follow a few simple guidelines and then have fun–this is a place for kids with a penchant for cartoons and Crayolas.

In my son’s California bedroom, the nautical theme set the direction with a modern twist.

10 Tips on How to Create a Styled Boys Room He’ll Love

You can mix patterns and design elements if it connects to a unifying theme, like color or style. Personalize with favorite toys or heirloom pieces.

  1. Begin with a white room: Paint walls in a crisp, fresh white. We love Benjamin Moore’s Decorator White for its crisp look that beautifully reflects light. Plus, the neutral color will be easy to swop out different design whims as your son gets older.
  2. Settle on a theme: Whether it be nautical, traditional or something more kitsch like superheroes or sports teams, chose a theme to help direct your design,
  3. Color: Choose one dominant color, such as classic boy’s blue, to set the color scheme.
  4. Research: Scour sites, social media and magazines for looks you respond to.
  5. Shop: Look for accents and furnishings that support your theme.
  6. Be creative: If you couldn’t find a piece you found online try creating it yourself. This is what we did with the framed sailing alphabet flags. After sourcing them online, I cut costs by framing at Michael’s rather than using an expensive gallery.
  7. Mix patterns: Different patterns can work together, even seal a designer look, if they share a color or print.
  8. Use what you have: Don’t be so quick to toss old baby toys and passed down pillows. While they may seem outdated or don’t support the room’s style, once the designed room is complete, that special memento may be the accessory to add a personal touch.
  9. Comfort: Since this is a multi-tasking room focused on sleep, be sure to have plenty of pillows and textiles to reinforce the comforting vibe.
  10. Designer secret/customize: Find a fabric you love and have your tailor make into seat cushions or pillows.
