Forget Halloween Inflatables: Simple Autumn Decor that’s Festive without the Kitsch

Decorating for the autumn season doesn’t have to be about layering on chintzy decor that will be hitting the bargain aisle in a few weeks. From pumpkins to linens, use decorative flare that is more classic and seasonal than plastic novelty items. Here, we feature ideas that will add festive yet understated touches to your autumn home.

The colors of fall are decor on their own, compliment nature’s spectacle with a simple bunting hung across a gate.

You can either gorge on gourds or keep it simple with a few pumpkins in a mix of colors and sizes. Make it an event to shop for pumpkins, even plan a trip to the patch, and pick what catches your eye. Play with different arrangements, as gourds are front step darlings.

A postbox is a prime opportunity to add the notes of autumn. Create a moat of mums, greenery and pumpkins around a corn stalk and post. Your postman will love you for it.

Preserve autumn’s colors by picking fallen leaves and coat with Mod Podge. Order rolls of burlap to drape over bushels of hay for added seating or as a table cloth, and strewn with your immortal leaves.

Take advantage of the last days of entertaining outdoors by setting a simple fall table. Essentials include a table cloth that corresponds to the autumn colors, bunting, pumpkins and pillows and blankets to provide added comfort.
