Forgot about the written word, how about the physical word? As we enter the season of nesting, creating handmade wooden letters is a great way to engage in mindful projects as gifts or for the home. Everything you need to know about this satisfying endeavor can be found in Krista Aasen’s book Creative Wood Letters. Here, Aasen provides easy to follow instructions on how to create your own wooden faux succulents.
Faux Succulents
Succulents are such strong and resourceful plants. By their very nature and design, they are able to withstand and flourish in the most difficult of growing conditions. While flowers are stunning with their lovely show of color, succulents have a quiet beauty that is difficult to surpass and that works perfectly with so many décor styles. With succulents being all the rage right now, this letter covered with faux succulents is one of my favorites in the book. I think it would be equally at home displayed on a wall, a bookshelf, or your front door. You can find faux succulents at any number of craft, home and garden, and big box stores.
Materials
1 wood letter of your choice
1 (2 ounce) jar moss-green craft paint
1 medium craft paintbrush
Selection of faux succulents
Small wire cutters or sharp scissors
Hot-glue gun and glue
- Give the wood letter one or two coats of the green craft paint so that it will be green underneath the succulents, in case any small spots show through between them. Paint the front and sides, as well as the back of the letter if it will be visible on your finished letter project.
2. If using a sheet of faux succulents, use wire cutters to remove the succulents from the sheet, and cut the plastic nibs down as close as you can to the bottom surface of each succulent to create a flat base.
3. Practice arranging the succulents on the letter until you come up with a design you like.
4. Use a hot glue gun to attach the succulents to the face of the letter, holding them in place briefly as the glue sets. Use glue gun to attach the succulents to the face of the letter, holding them in place briefly as the glue sets.
