7 Steps to Daily Skin Protection

I’ve been a bit spotty lately, and not from my lack of performance. After a brutal winter where I saw my skin for a few fleeting moments considering I was always swathed in warm clothing, being reacquainted with my skin has brought to attention a number of new blemishes. For years I have received the lectures from dermatologists to avoid the sun. Aside from living in a windowless home, they truly assume that I should never be outdoors no matter what the season. Since this proves to be a tad challenging, there are measures to take regarding proper skin protection.

Diet, vigilant sunscreen application, wearing sun preventive clothing and an attention to skincare should be part of the daily routine.

Foremost, for those who did not grow up during the tar beach generation, sunbathing is a concept akin to smoking tobacco for wellness—it’s extremely damaging, even cancerous. As you age those hot fleeting moments are like eating that second brownie, was it really necessary? The outcome will take its toll on your health, skin and the sun damage is irreversible. If you are of northern descent you can get enough sun by walking from your front door to the car. From beauty regimens to protection, skin needs as much daily attention as a hothouse flower.

7 steps to daily skin protection:
  1. Be sure to get enough sleep.
  2. Speak to your dermatologist about the proper routines for your skin type. There are also certain sunscreens that may cause reactions to sensitive skin and sample different products to find the right cream for your type.
  3. Hydrate throughout the day and avoid caffeine.
  4. Wash your face every morning, apply cream and then a sunscreen even when indoors. Sitting by a window, including in the car, and your skin is exposed.
  5. If you are outdoors, apply sunscreen rigorously and use a wide brimmed sunhat or umbrella for added protection. Your scalp is also susceptible to the sun’s rays.
  6. Exfoliate daily either with scrubs or use a Dermaroller, the “As Seen On TV” devise that looks like something you’d use to tenderize a steak. Any routine that invigorates the skin to stimulate collagen will improve the appearance of your skin.
  7. Eat a diet high in ant-oxidant foods like berries, nuts and dark chocolate.
