Typically you design a space and then add art. In our home the art takes precedence. (Though being an artist does factor into such favoritism). In this simple kitchen makeover a seamless flow is essential as it is the gateway to the dining and living areas, which is abundant with paintings, along with a white scheme to foster natural light and allow the works to have their ideal presentation.
We moved into our home over two years ago with the idea that we would eliminate its dated qualities in stages. The kitchen contained enough period details to make us feel like Archie Bunker was the former resident: dark cabinets, brown hued tile and appliances that may have been fashionable when you selected such wares from a Sears catalog.
Quick fixes included painting the cabinets, which are masterfully constructed, swopping out the golden hardware for chrome pieces, and bringing in a vintage inspired faucet, stove and fridge. Finishing accents for personalization are achieved from appliances, dishware, textiles, food and art.
A year later we completed the redesign by installing white subway tile, quartz counters, farmhouse sink and countertop appliances. Another crafty addition was to add a few inches of overhang to the adjunct countertop, allowing for more dining space. Overall the full embrace of the white palette, along with a statement making sink and supporting details, dramatically upgraded the room. There was no demolishing walls or other invasive treatments but a thoughtful attention to substantive additions, resulting in a kitchen with its own look that is both modern and classic.
